San Pedro de Alcantara, on the western Costa del Sol, is a beautiful Spanish seaside town. Unlike other towns in the area it´s life, until recently, centred more around agriculture than fishing due to the very fertile valley in which it is located.

san pedro d alcantara It was the first Marques del Duero back in the 1860´s who instigated the clearing and draining of 10,000 hectares of land in order to create a highly productive area which at one time produced much sugar cane.

However since the 1950´s the emphasis has moved away from farming towards, in common with most of the Costa del Sol, tourism. This, San Pedro, has managed to embrace successfully without losing its´original Spanish flavour. Officially it comes under the auspices of Marbella but in reality has its very own strong personality.

The clean tree lined streets and beautiful plazas are a delight to stroll around, or perhaps rest your feet and take some refreshment in one of the many street cafés. The architecture is typically Andalucian and there are many lovely churches. san pedro on the costa del sol You will find the indigenous population friendly and on the whole very patient with all the foreigners who invade their shores every summer, and owing to the wonderfully mild climate, well into the winter too.

San Pedro boasts many excellent restaurants to suit all tastes and pockets. A good variety of shops, all very individual, a refreshing change from the U.K. high street chains, where one high street could be any other. There is also a lively and competitive street market every Thursday, a bargain hunters paradise.

The beautiful blue flag beach is but a short stroll from the town centre along a wide palm tree lined avenue,or if you wish to drive there is plenty of parking at the front. The Paseo Maritimo, promenade, is a delightful place to stretch your legs, with the clean, sandy beach to one side of you and well planted gardens to the other.

promenade san pedro de alcantara Going east along the promenade you will come to an excellent Spanish bar/restaurant called ‘Rafas’. This offers first class Spanish cuisine at affordable prices. Or in the opposite direction you will come to another famous beach bar/ restaurant known as Borra Borra, this is very popular but slightly more pricey.

If you would like to learn a little about the past inhabitants of the area then visit the Roman Ruins known as Las Bovedas which date back to the 3rd century. These are located next to the Guadlamina Beach Club. Whilst the Paleochristian Balisilica Church and Necropolis will be found in the woods next to the Bora Borra Beach Club.

Situated on the main coast road between Marbella and Estepona, San Pedro has much to offer the visitor. First class accommodation is plentiful and based there you are in a good position to explore many other places of interest on the Costa del Sol. The toll road has relieved a lot of the traffic problems which the town used to experience and the new underpass, now under construction,( Sept. 2009) will help still further.
