The Picasso Museum,Malaga.

The Picasso Museum in Malaga is a wonderful tribute to this greatand innovative artist of the twentieth centuary.

It had been a long time desire of the artist himself, as well as his family, that he should have a presence in his birthplace city of Málaga. The Picasso Museum is one of only three in the world dedicated exclusively to the artist. He was one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century being as he was both an innovator of artistic styles and techniques and thus changed the course of modern art.

The Picasso Museum is located in the historic city center and surrounded by most characteristic monuments : Cathedral, Arabian Fortress “Alcazaba”, Roman Theater, Gibralfaro Castle, Picasso’s birthplace at the Plaza de la Merced and the Iglesia de Santiago, where he was baptised. The majority of the permanent collection is exhibited in the Palacio de Buenavista. This lage noble house is typical of Andalusian architecture of the 16th centruy, with a mixture of Renaissance and Mudejar elements. Christine Ruiz Picasso, principal donor of the funds, had expressed her wish that the building should be of typical Andalusian architecture.

In its twelve halls, the Picasso Museum will display amost 200 works of art which constitute the permanent collection. The art gallery will include 4 other halls for temporary exhibits. Completing the installations are an assembly hall, a library, an educational department and an investigation and a promotion center.

Curated by Picasso experts Salvador Haro and Harald Thiel the exhibition will assemble 90 pieces including paintings, sculpture, drawings and ceramics. The characteristics of each of these mediums will be analysed and set against the sum of Picaso´s works with regard both to form and to the subject matter chosen by the artist.
