The mountains plunge straight into the crystal clear sea and the rocky coastline juts proudly against a backdrop of sea and sky.

The town itself has managed to remain relatively unaffected by all the recent development along the western Costa del Sol and still retains much of its traditional Spanish charm. The narrow cobbled streets invite exploration and long walks that lead to delightful surprises and hidden gems. There is a Tuesday street market where local wares ranging from jewelery to exquisite craftwork are displayed and there is of course an abundance of excellent places to stop and take refreshment from pavement cafes to first class restaurants.

El Balcon de Europa is a major landmark jutting as it does out into the sea and affording spectacular views of the beautiful sea and beaches to either side.A palm tree lined avenue leads visitors up to it and apart from being a focal point it is also the setting for many local celebrations such as the starting point for the procession for the festival of San Isidro. The beautifulAndalucian horses and Sevillana dancers then wend their way up to the famous Nerja caves. nerja caves

These marvellous caves are said to have the longest stalactites in the world, they also have 22 prehistoric cave paintings and a fabulous cavern that has been transformed into a concert hall.Visitors from all over the world come to visit them and they are definitely a must see attraction whilst in the area.

Aside from the pretty town Nerja also boasts some fabulous beaches, the coastline is more rugged here then on the western Costa del Sol and this leads to some lovely bays and rocks for clambering on. Burriana Beach is one of the most popular beaches, being around 800m long and with a good choice of bars and restaurants along the landward side.

To the west of the town lies Playazo beach, another very long beach, superb for walking on. It doesn´t have as many cafes and bars as Burriana and as a result tends to be less populated but go equipped with your own picnic and you will have a wonderful day.

Torrecilla beach is situated in the centre of the town and does have a plentiful supply of beachside bars and restaurants so is always very popular.

Frigilliana is another delightful Spanish town tucked in the hills behind Nerja. It is a beautifully preserved, white-washed village which shows very little traces of the passing of centuries.

nerja beach A perfect way to spend time in this area and explore such gems as Nerja, Frigilliana and Torrox is to rent a villa and take your time driving along the scenic coast road and heading up into the hills. The climate is about the best you can get in the whole of Spain, the air fresh, the scenery stunning, the cuisine and wines perfect and the people friendly, what more could you want.
