The vineyards around Manilva produce a wonderful sweet white Moscatel grapewhich is used both on the table and in the production of a white table wineand a sweet almost sherry like mostos, which is surprisingly potent. The first weekend in September sees the celebration of the grape harvest with two days of festivities. It begins with a Mass in honour of Ntra Sra de los Dolores accompanied by the Manilva Parish Choir. After the service the Virgen, accompanied by the Municipal Band is carried from the Church, through the streets of Manilva, to Calle Mar where there is an offering of grapes. There is then be a contest to find the biggest bunch of grapes afterwhich there is an auction of the winning entrants. Starting around 10.00 p.m. there is music and dancing in the plaza and intrue Spanish style this will go on until the early hours of the morning. Around mid-day on Sunday the festivities re-commence with more music inthe streets, sampling of both wines, grapes and other local produce alongwith the first grape juice of the season produced in time honoured fashion. Later in the day the local horsemen and women parade through the streetsand then the grape harvest culminates with a ceremonial treading of the grapes. All in all it is a wonderful weekend of festivities, music and laughter, well helped on it's way with generous amounts of the local wine, if you arein the area during the first weekend of September then don't miss it.
