measures 4.5km in length and crosses the Sierra de Grazalema, following an underground river which forms huge caverns and underground lakes and eventually comes out at the Cueva de Hundidero. Although it is open to the public it is not advisable to go in unaccompanied as the underground rivers and lakes can prove dangerous, neither is it permissible to go in at all during the winter months when the often torrential rains in this part of the world can swell these water courses quite phenomenally.
The large mouth to the cave, which is shaped like a cat, hence the name cueva del gato, gato being Spanish for cat, has resulted in the cave being in use by man since prehistoric times. Archaeologists have found much proof of this in the form of a lot of prehistoric remains such as axes, tools made from polished bones, figurines showing idols and red ochre pottery throughout.
El Cueva del Gato is located near to the village of Benaojan, about 7 kms. from Ronda, in the province of Málaga, Andalucia. When you arrive at the village look for Venta la Cueva del Gato and here you can park your car and from there a 10 minute walk will bring you to the cave. The lovely deep plunge pool in front of the cave is popular with bathers and fishermen alike and even though you may not enter the cave it is a lovely place to visit and spend the afternoon.
