Casita de la Mena Oak
La Mena Oak in May 2005.
May 16th, we spent two weeks at La Mena Oak and enjoyed some excellent bird watching,
photographing was more difficult but enjoyable.I regularly walk along the river about 2 Km west, (very short of water in May) where I picked up Hoopoe, Jay, Little Ringed Plover, Night Heron, Purple Heron, Little Egret, single Black Winged Stilt & Golden Oriole. In the reeds and Bamboo shrub were, Sardinian Warbler, Fan tailed Warbler, Reed Warbler, Cttis Warbler, Serin, Cirl Bunting.Further along the road (about 2Km) and in the Bamboo shrub were singing Nightingale, as many as four singing birds, (see photo) plus Goldfinch, Crested Larks and lots of other Warblers and Finches and Corn Bunting.
In front of La Mena Oak and along the road we saw Bee Eaters every day, Goldfinches, Little Owl, a Booted Eagle and Bonelies Eagle floated down from the west, hunting the valleyon more than one occasion. A pair of Kestrel, Collard Dove, Spotless Starling were all within sight from La Mena Oak.Just off the Monda Road we watched Red Rumped Swallow on several days and whilst having lunch at a venta we had excellent views of Golden Oriole. Night Heron and Little Egret, also Great Spotted Woodpecker and a Cuckoo. We took a trip to Churro Gorge (twice) to see Griffon Vulture, Red billed Chough and here I picked up several Alpine Swift. In the wood we saw Coal Tit, Great Tit and Crested Tit and Goldcrest.
