Learning Spanish is not a difficult task and whether you are going to the Costa del Sol

or Andalucia for a holiday, business, to play golf or perhaps to live, it is a good idea to try and learn Spanish to some degree.

The Spanish people are very tolerant of all the foriegners who reguarly, and often permanently, invade their shores but they really do appreciate it if you make some attempt to converse in their language.

You will find that Spanish has a lot of similarities with English and the secret when trying to learn Spannish is to take it one step at a time and not to be overwhelmed by it. Just start slowly, practise what you know when you are here, and most importantly enjoy the challenge.

Below are a few words and phrases to get you started but it really is important to get a good course consisting of books and Cds. I found this a better way to learn Spanish than going to a classes, you can study at home in your own time, or even in the car, and get the pronunciation right with the Cds.

¡Hola!------------------------------Hello

¿como esta?------------------------how are you?

¿habla ingles?----------------do you speak English?

No Hablo espanol--------------I don't speak Spanish

Buenas Dias--------------------Good day

Buenas Tardes-----------------Good Afternoon

Buenas Noches----------------Good Night. ( however you often find people simply say buenas at any time.)

Da me ( pronunced da, with a short a me) This literally means give me, which may sound rude to us but is the normal way to ask for things e. g.:-

da me una cerveza---------Give me a beer ( or as we would say can I have a beer)

da me un cafe con leche-----Give me a white cofeee

dame medio kilo de queso----Give me half a kilo of cheese.

Gracias---------------------------Thankyou.

Por Favor------------------------Please.

Vale-------------------------------You will hear this alot.It basically means O.K. alright, and often ends a conversation. ( remember that V is pronnounced as B )

¿Donde Estar?------------------ a very useful phrase meaning where is it?

¿Donde esta los servicios?---- where are the toilets?

¿Donde esta la playa?--------where is the beach?

¿Donde esta el correos?-----where is the Post Office?

¿Cuanto es? ----------------------another useful phrase meaning how much is it?

¿Tiene? ---------------------------Do you have? This is the word normaly used to ask for something in a shop or restaurant etc.e.g.

¿Tiene leche? -----------------Do you have milk?

¿Tiene azucar-----------------Do you have sugar?

¿Tiene pollo?------------------Do you have chicken?

Mas or menos-------------------More or less

¿Como se llame en español?--------------------------What is it called in Spanish? A good way to improve your Spanish to to ask the name of things, people are nearly always happy to oblige.

es dos y media------------------it is half past two

es la una---------------------------it is one o´clock.

es tres menos quince ------------- it is a quarter to three.( quince meaning 15 and menos =less)

Well I could go on for ever but I hope that just gives you a start and maybe inspires some of you to learn Spanish. If you are serious though do give consideration to one of the language courses mentioned above, it will be money very well invested and will add another dimension to your stay in Spain.
